Some common questions and answers for cutting boards: Q: What types of wood do I use? A: I use a variety of woods for my cutting boards. The most common wood used for the main part of the board is usually plain hard maple. I have used bird's eye maple as well as tiger striped maple. The supply of the last 2 are very limited and rarely available. The woods used for the designs are: mahogany, cherry, black walnut, hickory/pecan and some mesquite. I tend to stay away from open grain woods that would allow food particles to get in the grains.
Q: What size are the cutting boards? A: The typical size that I normally make is approximately 11" wide and 15 1/2" long when finished. I have made boards that are larger, but I can not warranty them from warping, twisting and splitting. The thickness of the boards runs between 5/8" and 3/4".
Q: Are the boards food safe, and how should they be cleaned? A: Yes! I treat them when finished with food-safe mineral oil; which can be purchased at most any kitchen store. I recommend that the boards be treated once a week for the first month, and then about once a month thereafter. The board should be cleaned with warm water and air-dried, then treated with mineral oil if needed.
Q: What is the price for a cutting board? A: The prices vary, depending on various conditions such as: size, design, wood, and other special requests. Most boards range between $25 and $50 with $5 increments. This price does NOT include and shipping and handling charges. I will discount the prices with a multiple order of 4 or more boards.
Q: Are the designs done with an in-lay? A: No, I do not use in-lays. The designs are solid wood , just like the rest of the board. You can flip the board over to the backside and still see the design. Even though the design can be seen from either side, I still make one side a bottom, rounding the top outer edge and putting small rubber feet on the bottom for stability.
Q: Do I carry any inventory? A: I tried when I first started, but then I seem to have several boards laying around forever. Currently I do not stock inventory of any kind nor of any particular design. Each person has their own taste and it is difficult for me to forecast what that may be at any given time.
Q: Do I take special requests for designs? A: I will be happy to discuss your particular desire in a specific design. However, this does not always mean the I will be able to make what you are wanting.
Q: Can I get a juice trench in my cutting board? A: Yes, but it can ONLY be across the bottom, NOT around the entire edge of the board. There is an additional $5 charge for this.
Q: What types of payment do you take? A: I currently only take cash, cashier's check, money orders, and personal checks. Personal checks must clear my bank before shipment will be processed.
Q: Are the boards covered by a warranty? A: I will only replace cutting boards within 1 month of the ship date or the date the order is picked up in person. The warranty only covers splitting from normal conditions. Normal conditions does NOT include misuse or improper cleaning, such as being cleaned in a dishwasher. I can tell if one has been placed in a dishwasher. Just be honest with me and I will do my best to make you a new one at a discounted price.
If I have not answered a question that you have, please feel free to contact me by phone or email.
